| Graduate Assistantships (GA) are offered
to highly qualified graduate applicants based on scholarly merit.
Most MS students are supported for two years and most PhD GA awards
are for three years. The average GA appointment is 50% appointment (20
hours per week) and usually lasts for one academic year (9 months).
There are also 25% appointments requiring 10 hours per week.

Center for
Graduate Teaching Excellence is designed to provide GAs
information and ideas to perform their various duties at SIUC.
International students must satisfy university requirements for
English language proficiency if duties include teaching.
The
Master's Fellowship is a one-time award at the master's
degree level that is designed for those nominees who show the
greatest promise for scholarly and professional achievement in
their respective disciplines. The fellowship will be awarded for
three semesters, fall, spring, and summer for a total of eleven
(11) months.

Typical Teaching Assistantship assignments
are:
- Environmental Conservation (GEOG 100) – Assist instructor
with class attendance, testing, grading, and assisting students.
- World Geography (GEOG 103) -- Assist instructor with class
attendance, testing, grading, and assisting students.
- Weather, Climate, and Society (GEOG 104) -- Attend two
1-hour classes per week, lead labs each week. Assist instructor with class
attendance, testing, grading, and assisting students.
- Geography, People, and the Environment (GEOG 300i) – Assist instructor
with class attendance, testing, grading, and assisting students.
- Physical Geography of the Americas (GEOG 303i) -- Attend two
2-hour classes per week, lead labs each week.
- Meteorology (GEOG 330) -- Attend classroom lectures and lead
labs each week following a standardized workbook. Preference
given to a Masters student with a Concentration in Weather and
Climatology.
- Intro to Geographic Information Systems (GEOG 401) -- TA
will attend one 2-hour lecture and teach labs each week. Preference
given to Masters student with Concentration in GIS.
- Intro to Remote Sensing (GEOG 406) -- TA will attend one
2-hour lecture and teach labs each week. Preference given to
Masters student with Concentration in GIS.
- Cartographic Design (GEOG 416) -- Attend one 2-hour lecture
and teach labs each week. Preference given to Masters student
with Concentration in GIS.
